So cogent, so right, but so sad. I hope Black politicians read this because they have not only lost their power and influence, but have lost the people who once believed that they could help our situation. Now to things at hand-why don't you also do some research for Matt so he has the facts before he drinks so much accommodating tea?

While I can agree that black political clout has waned in recent years, I don't think that power can/should be measured simply by the number of black elected officials that we have in the region. In fact, I would argue that most(not all) of our black elected leadership has been ineffective at best recently. Ironically, this can be seen in the most recent budget that all of the black alderman voted in favor of, which was pretty damaging to mostly poor and black communities. When we juxtapose that with the remap battle, its clear to me that we have traded REAL political power for the symbolism of having black elected officials. I have reluctantly gotten to the point where I care less about the color of the elected official and more about the policies that those officials choose to support or fight against. The truth of the matter is that few of our black elected leaders are forming the type of coalitions that are necessary today, especially in Chicago, as our population declines. The current remap fight sadly shows that too much of our political leadership is more interested in holding positions than developing real policy solutions that dog our communities. In my view, while our political power may have declined, it isn't because we have fewer elected officials, its because we have done little to really wield and grow the power that we already posess.

Great job....That was a powerful message to young African American and they do need to realize that they live in the real world. They don't need to b running after a "baller"...what they need to run after is a career. Get their own money than go look for a "ballet" if they want.

Wow if this isn't the truth. I hate that the women or young girls of our generation want to do and become what they see on television. Its great that we have people trying to empower our women of today. This blog is well written in many aspects. We must continue to strive for better within the African American community. Through out time Africans Americans have been blinded by the media and forgotten where they come from and what it truly means to be successful. I encourage woman to read this as well as fathers to teach their daughters so that woman can continue with their endeavors and remain focus.

Lorenzo I loved this blog. We have so many young women going down the wrong path. The media is definately part of the blame. Inspiring women that we see on television is limited besides women we see in a movie. Many of us are aspiring to be like women we watch on tv, which is a terrible thing. We need to aspire to be like the women previously stated in your article, Power Houses!
