Perri R. Small is one of the city’s most astute journalists, specializing in social issues, politics and education. With more than 30 years of print and broadcast journalistic experience, Small is a favored speaker, panelist and moderator, lending her thoughts and unique brand of truth-talk in forums and town hall meetings.
Small began her career covering City Hall and the ‘Council Wars’ which ensued after the election of the late Harold Washington, Chicago’s first African American Mayor. Her tenacity and professionalism lead to Small being asked to join Mayor Washington’s administration as an Assistant Press Secretary.
Small returned to her broadcast journalistic roots as an Executive Producer at WVON. Her passion of speaking did not let her remain behind the scenes for long, and she soon began hosting evening shows and the coveted morning drive with Matt McGill, until her large personality called for her own show. In addition to hosting the mid-morning show, Small produces small projects, including the critically acclaimed radio documentary: From zero to fifty: How Mayor Richard M. Daley marginalized Black politics in Chicago.
