The Harper High School radio documentary features reporter Alex Kotlowitz, author of the book "There Are No Children Here," reporting with Linda Lutton and Ira Glass from WBEZ. They spent five months at Harper High School gathering information for this documentary. This documentary describes a "turnaround" school as it comes off a year in which 29 current and recent students were shot. Matt and Linda discuss the making of the documentary. Linda says that the gang lines are so strongly defined in the neighborhood the school that people are associated by gangs whether they want to or not.

Matt then talks about President Barack Obama's ban on assault style weapons, and the fatal shooting that took place outside of the Simeon-Morgan Park basketball game last night at Chicago State University. Two people were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting last night.

Matt welcomes his guest co-host Brandon Real Talk Williams. Matt and Brandon discuss young basketball hopeful Jabari Parker. Matt previews discussion about President Obama making a decision on gun laws, and a controversal ad by the National Rifle Association.

6:24 a.m. Matt previews a discussion with Tavis Smiley about online petition. Matt introduces Brandon, who is a poet, a playwright and a mentor. Matt and Brandon discuss the need for mentorship in the black community. Matt says that Brandon, as a journalism and advertising major, will be instrumental in choosing the images and ads seen by the Black community.

6:36 a.m. Matt previews a discussion with Tavis Smiley. Matt then talks about Alton Logan, the man who got 26 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit. Matt ask about how much impact John Burge has had on the live of the men falsely accused by him. Matt hopes more attention will be on the people who facilitated the tactics of Burge. Matt says that major winfalls for the city should be taken out of the pensions on the responsible officers.

6:53 a.m. Matt welcomes Tavis Smiley, who discusses his poverty tour "Vision for a New America: A Future without Poverty" Featuring Newt Gingrich, chair of the CBC Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (D-OH), Dr. Cornel West, Jonathan Kozol, Jeffrey Sachs, Mariana Chilton, and more. Tavis says that he is asking for President Obama to make a national public policy speech on poverty and then convene a national White House Conference in the Eradication of Poverty in America. Tavis also says that he would like people in Chicago to make their voices heard by signing the online petition at

Matt and Brandon discuss the gang culture, and the feeling of belonging some people find in gangs. Matt then discusses President Obama's upcoming announcement on gun laws. Matt says that children will be at the press conference. Matt and Brandon discuss a controversaol ad made by the NRA. Matt then plays the ad, which makes the claim the Presidents kids have armed guards, so all schools should. Matt calls the ad "Stupid" and says that the president's children are off limits.

The Post, in cooperation with the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education, continues another project that explores the experiences of black men in America. Titled “BrotherSpeak,” the three-part video series is another chance to hear from the black men about what matters most to them. For the series, we asked a range of black men to discuss three words: Fear, love and dream. Each video focuses on one word.

Matt then talks about the articles in both papers that talk about settlements that are to be paid out because of misconduct on behalf of the Chicago Police Department. He discusses the cases involving both Alton Logan and Christina Eilman, where Logan will receive a $10.25 million dollar settlement and Eilman will receive a $22.5 million dollar settlement. Chritina Eilman's settlement is expected to be one of the largest settlements of a police negligence case in Chicago’s history.

Alisa Massaro, 18; Bethany McKee, 18; Adam Landerman, 19 and Joshua Miner, 24, all of Joliet, Ill., have been arrested in the robbery and strangulation deaths of two 22-year-old males, Eric Glover and Terrence Rankins. One of the young adults arrested is the son of a Joliet police sergeant. He also speaks about the 17 human heads that were found at O'Hare airport. Matt takes calls from listeners.

Matt says there is a meeting about school closings in Chicago. A lot of the conversation will be centered around the quality of charter schools vs. neighborhood schools. Matt comments on the shootings in areas aside from the South and West sides. He also comments on the debate on assault weapons in the U.S. and previews talk with Salim Muwakkil at 7am.

6:24 a.m. Matt and David Martin IV discuss the football games from this past weekend. Matt comments on seeing two black quarterbacks playing in the games over the weekend. He also takes calls from listeners.

General Powell noted that there is a "dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party." He goes on to explain that by this he means that the G.O.P. still sort of looks down on minorities.

6:36 a.m. John Bryson current U.S. commerce of secretary has been cited for a hit & run, with Bryson working under Barack Obama. This felony gives republicans an opinion to use against President Obama to be re-elected.
