Sonny Means
Monday through Friday 6am - 9am At the tender young age of 10 years old, Anderson Means, Jr., affectionately referred to as "Sonny Means", knew exactly what he wanted to do with his life. After listening to the now deceased and then famous Walter Winchell, on the old beat-up Mahogany radio in his grandmother's living room, Sonny's fate was sealed—he would be a radio broadcaster! Most of Sonny's professional journey, since that life altering moment in 1953, has been centered on that goal. He has had a long and rewarding career in the broadcast media. To name a few of his many accomplishments, Sonny was the first sportscaster for WGRT/WJPC radio and has lined up an impressive history with WBMX, Channel 26 TV, and was the first black boxing color commentator for ESPN TV. Major highlights in his media career were the on-sight coverage of the Muhammad Ali vs. Ken Norton (WJPC radio) and the Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Roberto Duran (WCFL Radio) boxing matches. Sonny first joined the staff of WVON in 1994 as a sports reporter and continues with the WVON family as the Sports Director and Host of the Saturday Sports Talk show. "Sonny Means" has been married to the Rev. Roy Etta Quateka-Means for 40 years and is the proud father of five children: Tracy, Lamonte, Necole, Melodnea, and Jermaine. He is also the boastful grandfather of seven precious grandchildren. "Sonny Means" contributes his career and life successes to hard work, a never-give-up-attitude, the support of his family and, ultimately, to the grace of God.
