WVON has gone into our vault and dusted off some gems just in time for lover’s season. We are proud to present not one but two 9CD Boxed Sets filled with 1960s and 70s soul hits from the legendary Stax/Volt Records.
The story of the great Memphis soul label, Stax/Volt, can be divided into two phases. The early years, from 1959 through the beginning of 1968, when the label was developing its sound and image and was distributed by Atlantic Records. Phase II is the post-Atlantic years from May 1968 through the end of 1975 when Stax/Volt began its transformation from a small, down-home enterprise to a corporate soul powerhouse. Phase I was chronicled in an acclaimed 9-CD box set, The Complete Stax / Volt Singles 1959-1968 released by Atlantic Records in 1991.
Available now in Volume 2 are 216 soul singles from the Stax/Volt post-Atlantic years between 1968 and 1971. Featured are some of the biggest and best-loved hits of the day, including Isaac Hayes’ “Theme From Shaft”; The Staple Singers’ “Respect Yourself”; and Johnnie Taylor’s “Who’s Making Love”, as well as a number of little-known gems by both major and less familiar artists. Reissued in a compact and sleek new brick packaging with an accompanying, full-color, comprehensive booklet. To be released later this year, Volume 3: covers 1972-1975 and will be issued by Stax/Concord Music Group.
